Color Abounds

Color….. no other time is it more spectacular in Central New York than in Autumn. A drive down any street or road – a stroll beside the lake – down a path along a river – everywhere the eyes rest will be glorious color. The garden flowers are finishing up their stay even as the first leaves fall from the branches above. We turn our gaze upward and are greeted with reds, oranges, yellows, greens and browns of the turning foliage.
The artists at Gallery 54 bring these beautiful colors to their work. Always evolving – ever changing, the gallery is filled with the shapes and colors of the season.
Our October featured artists are Terry Askey-Cole and Donna Smith. They present Autumn Hues, a collection of ceramics, assemblages and jewelry.
We are open to inspire the artist in everyone every day as we celebrate Autumn in Skaneateles.

How It Works

Painting by Lisa Noviasky, our September featured artist
Once a month
Sitting in a circle
Agenda in hand
Respect in the room
Each item checked off
Each discussion thorough
Everyone heard
Till at last
We tire
Give it a rest
Drive our separate ways
Into our own evenings

You bet they do.

Gone Fishing

Summer is in full swing here in Skaneateles. Breezes blow in from the lake to cool the air.
Visitors, local residence and tourists all stop by the gallery as they stroll the sidewalks.
We have updated our look with several new display cases and many new items. We hear wonderful comments from those who come to check out what Gallery 54 has to offer.

Last week our huge purple fish metal sculpture by James Seaman swam away with a customer to go live by a beautiful swimming pool. We hear he is quite happy there (well he could be a she I suppose). His/her departure left space for a whole school of fish to swim in. Look by the front door to see Sallie Thompson’s ceramic fish. Maybe one could swim into your heart and go home with you.

We invite you to come by for our First Friday opening on August 5th when Gallery 54 will join the other businesses in Skaneateles as we celebrate from 6-9 PM. Our August featured artists are Heather Henningan who works in glass making fabulous one of a kind jewelry, and Kathy Schneider, an award winning painter.

Little Visitors

Some little folks have shown up at Gallery 54. They are quietly residing in the Lake Room of the gallery. “Kate” sits atop the jewelry case with her pocketbook in hand while “Clove” with leaf wings spread flies above her head on the brick wall. These sweet faced assemblages are work by Donna Smith. Donna’s creations are made from reclaimed/found objects such as spice tins, thimbles, buttons and china doll faces, each with a unique personality. We wonder what they might be saying when we close the door and turn out the lights at the end of the day. Do they whisper to one another about being adopted by one of our customers?
A word about First Friday: the village of Skaneateles rolls out the welcome mat for visitors to stroll the sidewalks enjoying the evening filled with entertainment and art opening receptions at the galleries in town.  Gallery 54’s opening, “Fiber and Ore”, will feature the work of Dana Blythe Stenson, metalsmith jeweler and Sharon Bottle Souva, quilt maker. The restaurants and many of the stores join in the evening’s festivities. So come on out July 1st from 6-9.

Dragonflies!

Who doesn’t love dragonflies? Just sit in a room and mention them and sure enough the stories will start. Someone will show a beautiful tattoo, another will tell about witnessing a hatch, while another will remember trying to catch them when they were young. Books are filled with images and tales of their spiritual meaning.
Gallery 54 honors these beautiful winged creatures during the month of June. Member artists have created various dragonfly themed works in a special exhibit. You will find glass, pottery, wood , paintings, fiber and jewelry all celebrating the dragonfly.
Stop by and see the dragonflies before they fly away.
Members of Gallery 54 have been busy outside of the gallery as well. Check our website for details.
Kathy Schneider – painter  was highlighted in the magazine “Life in the Finger Lakes” and has become a Signature Member in The Central New York Watercolor Society (www.centralnewyorkwatercolorsociety.org) which has only 200 members throughout the United States.
